On Golden Pond The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Fridays, Saturdays. Continues through June 12 2010

Now over 30 years old, Ernest Thompson's crowd-pleasing tale showcases his tough love for Norman and Ethel Thayer, a flinty, loony old couple who've summered at their beloved Maine cottage for most of their married life. Kristina Schramm's staging tries to tap into the mostly earned emotions and stoic sentiment of Thompson's touching valedictory--but chokes on Mark Shallow, majorly miscast as crusty, cranky, needy, crafty Norman. Neither lovable nor vulnerable, Shallow's Norman seldom suggests an 80-year-old anxious to make amends for a lifetime of mistakes. Marie Goodkin's spunky, loyal Ethel offers nearly enough sunset-soaked charm for two. But, given Shallow's pivotal role, her efforts are squandered. --Lawrence Bommer
