On the Avenue

A classy, restrained Fox musical, which might seem a contradiction in terms—though the casting of Madeleine Carroll in the Alice Faye role explains a lot. She's an heiress who infiltrates a Broadway show when she learns she's being lampooned in it; soon enough, she falls in love with director Dick Powell (the same story, with the sexes reversed, was later used for the Cukor-Monroe Let's Make Love). Roy Del Ruth, an energetic fugitive from Warner Brothers, directed; with the Ritz Brothers, Joan Davis, and George Barbier (1937). 89 min.
