Once New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater) Recommended Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: June 4-7 2015

And yet once again. First, in 2006, there was the popular little film about Guy, a miserable Dublin street troubadour who gets brought back to life by a girl from the Czech Republic. Then came the Broadway musical written by Enda Walsh, with all those lovely tunes originally composed for the film by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. It won a bunch of Tony awards, so a touring production naturally followed. Chicagoans got their first look at that back in 2013, and now the tour has wound back around to us for another, brief stand, with substantially the same cast (though Alex Nee and Ryan Link will take turns as Guy here, filling in for Stuart Ward). The current run retains the sweet, gruff temper and casual virtuosity that made all the previous incarnations of Once so appealing. Who'd have guessed that an evening filled with sad songs could yield such pleasure? —Tony Adler
