One Hit Wonders | Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

One Hit Wonders Closing (Theater and Galleries) Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Wednesdays-Sundays. Continues through June 29 2014

In creating this jukebox show, writer Rueben D. Echols (in collaboration with Dawn Bless) cleverly avoids the standard Black Ensemble Theater formula—a pile of golden oldies by black artists on a specific theme interspersed with forgettable bits of verbiage—and instead has crafted a backstage musical in which we watch a standard BET production come together, witnessing the myriad setbacks, tiny dramas, and moments of triumph that go into its making. Yes, the resulting show, directed by Daryl D. Brooks and performed by an ensemble of kick-ass triple threats, is sugarcoated—and a tad predictable (another part of the BET formula); it's still charming and satisfying. And as in all BET shows, the musical performances are out of this world. —Jack Helbig
