Opal Dream

Set in a dusty Australian opal-mining town, this pleasant if twee family film follows an ordeal set in motion by a nine-year-old girl's devotion to her two imaginary friends, Pobby and Dingan. Her family indulges the youngster's fantasy life until the father is arrested and accused of poaching gems from a private mine while pretending to search for the girl's lost playmates. Her older brother swings into action, attempting to locate Pobby and Dingan for the inconsolable little girl while simultaneously vindicating his father. The film clearly means to celebrate the power of imagination, but while younger kids may find it charming, some parents may begin to wonder if the girl's obsessive fantasies don't warrant a trip to the local shrink. Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) directed. 85 min.
