Optimism | Chicago Reader

This dull, arch 2002 indie comedy by Christian McDonald follows a darkly handsome kid (Chet Hardin) as he turns 18 and is released from the mental institution to which his mother committed him. Of course, everyone he meets on the street is crazier than he is, and eventually he gets sucked into a left-wing nut's scheme to get even with the local mayor. Handwritten notations and arrows appear on the screen commenting wryly on the characters, an effect easily accommodated by the film's lethargic pace. 82 min.
