Orange (Tapuz)

The production of oranges in Palestine and Israel is the ostensible subject of this 1998 video by Amos Gitai, but it's hardly a conventional documentary. Combining scenes of groves and a packing plant, voice-over of literary texts about oranges, and interviews with Palestinian grove workers whose daily commute is made more difficult by delays at Israeli checkpoints, Gitai finds a variety of cultural connections in a product long considered a symbol of the Holy Land. Several times black-and-white stills show earlier periods in orange cultivation, and the fact that they're purposefully being moved by hand reminds us that all images are human constructions. 58 min.
