To the editors:
Regarding the article about Paul Freeman (September 23) and his chamber orchestra, we applaud his efforts, especially toward affirmative action for minorities.
However, it should be pointed out that his group is only the newest, and not the only performing orchestra in the western suburbs. Most prominent of these is the Oak Park-River Forest Symphony Orchestra, directed by Dr. Perry Crafton. This symphony, entering its 57th season, performs the full range of orchestral repertoire and is considered one of the finest community orchestras to be found anywhere.
Also worthy of mention is the Ethos Chamber Orchestra, directed by Ron Holleman. Now in its sixth season, Ethos performs an eclectic program, ranging from Bach to Thelonious Monk.
This area is far from being the cultural wasteland that the article suggests.
