Orion: The Man Who Would Be King | Chicago Reader

Orion: The Man Who Would Be King

90 minutes 2015

This British documentary chronicles the rise and fall of Orion, a masked singer whose Elvis-like voice and look won him passing fame following the King's death in 1977. Sly record-company executives led fans to believe the man behind the dazzling eye mask was really Presley, yet the crooner was an aspiring Mississippi singer, Jimmy Ellis, who enjoyed his sudden stardom but quickly grew weary of the gimmick. Director Jeanie Finlay (The Great Hip Hop Hoax ) takes a compassionate look at Ellis's life and career, and in doing so elevates one of rock 'n' roll's more bizarre footnotes into an affecting parable of fame, ambition, and identity.
