Scrappy Linchpin Theatre's third production looks exactly like a scrappy company’s third production. Shoehorned into a sepulchral black box in a Catholic high school apparently lacking air-conditioning, Eleanor Kahn’s amenity-free design necessitates numerous interminable scene changes, while Dan Gallagher’s wash-friendly lighting design keeps a bed and sofa in frame no matter how far from home the characters roam. But the judicious, well-observed performances in director David Fehr’s astutely paced production carry the day. The four-person cast ably mine the anxious undercurrents in British playwright Laura Wade’s zeitgeisty 2006 dramedy about millennial relationship roadblocks—slacker culture, rampant corporatization, high-tech everything—and almost inject meaning into Wade’s facile central metaphor about repetitive motion injuries. Imagine what Linchpin might accomplish with a real budget and great script. —Justin Hayford
