This 2008 video profiles five female artists based in New York City. The youngest, Swoon, expresses her punk sensibility by displaying life-sized cutouts in galleries and on the street, while the eldest—painter, printmaker, and collage artist Nancy Spero, the widow of painter Leon Golub—prepares for her first show at the Venice Biennale at age 80. The most startling segment concerns performance artist Marina Abramovic, who engages in nude self-flagellattion; by contrast, printmaker and sculptor Kiki Smith and tapestry creator Ghada Amer seem more sedate, though their work isn?t. Chiara Clemente, a documentarian for Italian TV, gets in close enough to record her subjects' techniques but not close enough to reveal what makes the women tick.
