Our Kate Takes a Trip Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Saturdays, Sundays. Continues through Feb. 12 2012

Kate is the aging belle of Ballyvaughan: a working-class Irish charmer who frequents pubs, sings songs, and attracts a ragtag coterie of bleary but doting suitors. Apparently, the only village man immune to Kate's rough allure is her own boyfriend of 15 years, Will. He's too distracted by another woman's prodigious rack to tag along when Kate makes her annual pilgrimage to her mother's place to tend the garden—which, of course, leaves the way open for the others. Curious Theatre Branch's Beau O'Reilly wants to tell a sweet, cracked love story. But he's so enamored of Irish ways that he spends most of an hour just letting his characters be picturesque rather than building a real narrative around them. The sweet and cracked are here, but not the love story. Part of Rhinofest. —Tony Adler
