Out for Love . . . Be Back Shortly

Dan Katzir's vivid and sometimes moving 1994 autobiographical film documents his finding a girlfriend and their rocky relationship alongside political events in Israel, such as the signing of the Jordan peace treaty and Rabin's assassination. The director's offhand style contributes to this almost chaotic mix of public and private, showing how hard it is to separate the two in Israel, but the film also suffers from a self-indulgence typical of this burgeoning genre: if one presents current events in the context of an individual's emotional life, there's no need to research them, conveniently exempting history from analysis.
