Ovo Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Tuesdays-Sundays. Continues through Aug. 21 2011

There are some fabulous things to see in this Cirque du Soleil touring show, finally reaching us two years after its Montreal premiere. The foot juggling quintet is uncanny, less for their skill with objects than for the way they toss one another around. Slackwire artist Li Wei displays miraculous balance. The flying trapeze act is goosed up by an unorthodox three-platform rig. The contortionists are frankly sexy. And I was delighted by the dance of Creatura, a furry beast made of interlocking tubes. But the trademark Cirque fantasy narrative seems tacked-on here. The central romance is trite both in conception and realization, the egg that gives this circus its title is indeterminately used, the insect-world motif is often vague, banal or irrelevant. Though design elements may occasionally make you catch your breath, they never quite take it away. --Tony Adler
