While at the surface there doesn’t appear to be a high demand for rappers with throwback styles and penchants for rhyming about Smoke Daddy and Rainbo Club, the Palmer Squares don’t let that get in the way of having fun. Case in point: the local hip-hop duo finish off their new In Context (Stank Face) with the sunsetting joy of “Whatever Makes You Happy,” an undeniable track that shows off an underdog spirit. Throughout most of the album MCs Acumental and Terminal Knowledge rap like they’ve challenged one another to a tongue-twister contest; each pulls off flamboyant vocal acrobatics with an unaffected cool—and they manage to up their games even more when animated Chicago rapper Probcause pops in for “Squizad.” More often than not, the album is an amusing listen, and regardless of what’s en vogue—and whether the Palmer Squares could even give a fuck—they’ve actually built a sizable following. Since dropping via Bandcamp at the end of May, the free In Context has remained the most popular album on the site’s Chicago chart. —Leor Galil
