Loud, chaotic action dominates this unnecessary prequel to Peter Pan. An abandoned child living in a Dickensian orphanage, Peter is abducted and taken to Neverland, along with the rest of the orphans, by a wicked pirate (Hugh Jackman in a grating performance) who impresses them into service in a giant mine. Here Peter meets Hook (Garrett Hedlund), not yet a bad guy, who helps him escape. Director Joe Wright (Atonement) demonstrates little feel for the fantastic material, setting a slow, plodding pace and eliciting zero chemistry from his cast; the rare moments of levity feel woefully forced. With Rooney Mara.
