Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band

Michael Carmona's 2008 documentary chronicles the history of the seminal San Francisco homocore band Pansy Division. Talking-head interviews with the group's Peoria-bred founder, Jon Ginoli, and the other band members—as well as such supporters as Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong—address subjects ranging from homophobia and ageism in the music industry to the difficulties of maintaining creative freshness amid the perks and pressures of commercial success. Sometimes very raw concert footage shows the self-styled “buttfuckers of rock 'n' roll” in the recording studio and onstage at venues ranging from small clubs to large concert venues (including Chicago's Aragon Ballroom) and gay pride rallies. 83 min.
