Parade of the Unemployed All Ages Free

When: Sun., March 6 2011

Paul Durica, whose Pocket Guide to Hell series organizes historical walking tours of Chicago, directs a reenactment of the Parade of the Unemployed, a 1915 protest that saw 1,500 Chicagoans march from Hull-House to City Hall with demands for hunger relief and public works projects. Costumes and props will be provided. The updated version incorporates current unemployment rates; it also features actors including Alma Washington as labor activist Lucy Parsons, and circus-style music by Environmental Encroachment. Following the march, Hull-House serves refreshments, and Chicago Jobs With Justice's Susan Hurley leads a conversation.
