Paradise Lost Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through April 7 2012

The Agency Theater Collective overreached with this production of Clifford Odets's sprawling Depression-era family drama. There's talent in evidence, but not enough to stretch across 24 characters, a dozen subplots, and what feels like more monologues than Hamlet. Directors Andrew Gallant and Lisa Konoplisky can't hold all the threads together as they recount the Gordon family's fall into financial ruin. A video installation sputters on a few times without adding any substance, and musical numbers at the start and close of the show fall flat. With a few notable exceptions, most of the cast seem viscerally uncomfortable with their lines and one another, dropping 1930s slang with wooden affect and awkward timing. —Keith Griffith
