Parlour Song Closing (Theater and Galleries) Member Picks Recommended The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through May 9 2009

Jez Butterworth's acid etching of midlife crisis in a cookie-cutter British suburb feels like a cross between a Pinterian comedy of menace and Mike Leigh's portraits of ordinary people enduring the dual burdens of mundane humiliation and existential dread. The metaphors threaten to implode as spectacularly as the buildings destroyed by demolitions expert Ned (Tim Curtis), who suspects his wife Joy (Julia Siple) of stealing cuff links and tools from him while his somewhat gormless best friend Dale (Alex Gillmor) steals afternoon delights with Joy. But Robin Witt's deft staging stays on its toes, with fearless, vanity-free performances by the cast--especially Curtis, whose anguish is so palpable you want to bundle him off to the local for a pint and some sympathy. --Kerry Reid
