This intelligent supernatural drama stars Anne Hathaway as a grief counselor who, assigned to work with a group of plane-crash survivors, becomes attracted to one of them (Patrick Wilson). Director Rodrigo Garcia moves the story along gradually, which helps to mitigate some of the more formulaic elements; the first half plays like a quirky romantic drama, giving barely an inkling of the paranormal events that follow. The surprise ending isn't as shocking as those of Jacob's Ladder or The Sixth Sense—two stellar examples of the genre—but it's still dramatically potent. Cinematographer Igor Jadue-Lillo renders the Vancouver locales in suitably austere monochrome. With David Morse, Andre Braugher, and Diane Wiest. PG-13, 94 min.
