Patria Libre The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through May 4 2013

Maria lost her husband and infant daughter fighting with the Sandinistas, then fled to America with her three remaining children. She becomes a successful teacher with a loving family, but her past continues to intrude. Rebel fighters emerge from the refrigerator to steal her groceries; her husband's ghost stokes her paranoia. It's potentially explosive stuff, but playwright Zoe Miller-Lee extracts little drama from it, content to demonstrate her characters' temperaments rather than dramatizing their needs. Internally illogical fantasy elements further gum up the works. It's a slack, tangential evening, especially under Tara Branham's laissez-faire direction. Miller-Lee's violent climax is moving; it'd be doubly so if we got there more directly. —Justin Hayford
