A stubborn supercriminal (Mel Gibson), as ingenious as he is injury prone, survives a murder attempt and sets out to get revenge along with his share of some loot. Alluringly dark cinematography, mixed period details, and incongruous landmarks trendily set this farce in no particular time or place. The comic timing and Gibson's mugging are skillful, but the movie fulfills expectations of plot twists and ironic atmosphere only after having made clear that it won't be offering much else. Director Brian Helgeland (who cowrote L.A. Confidential) wrote the screenplay with Terry Hayes, based on the same novel (Richard Stark's The Hunter) as the 1967 Point Blank.
