Goodman Theatre continues its "Encore" program of streaming past productions with Raquel Carrío's play (based on the 1955 novel by Mexican writer Juan Rulfo) and directed by Flora Lauten (Lauten and Carrío are both from Cuba's celebrated Teatro Buendía). Rulfo's magic-realist tale of a son returning home to meet (and settle scores) with his father and finding a town of ghosts inspired later writers such as Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez. Reader critic Tony Adler called the 2013 production at the Goodman (part of the theater's Latino Theatre Festival) "an exquisite new stage adaptation" and praised the "creepy-gorgeous tableaux and moving images throughout [the show's] 90 music-punctuated minutes." It's presented in Spanish with closed captioning provided in English and Spanish.
