Hours: Breakfast, lunch, dinner: seven days
Upscale Italian/Mediterranean restaurant in the Raffaello Hotel.
Located in the Raffaello, a tony boutique hotel in Streeterville, Pelago is obliged to serve three hots, and though breakfast seems routine, the lunch and dinner menus sparkle with innovative Italianate flourishes. After tuning up with perfect seafood antipasti—ahi tuna on a delicate caponata and a scallop grilled to subtle translucence—we had gorgeously fine pastas, including hand-twirled trofie with green beans and wonderfully toothsome cappelletti in a lightweight, high-flavor spinach-marjoram sauce. A roll of pork and duck, unlike your standard turducken, managed to be moist throughout, each meat distinctly holding its own, accented by herbs. Roasted rack of lamb had a delicate mustard-herb dusting that created a luscious crust. Desserts were fanciful: we laughed when we saw the unbelievably light ricotta cheesecake, which looked more like delicious foam than cake; we also enjoyed a sugar-cookie ring filled with delightfully gooey marscapone, capped with brittle sugar sheets and clusters of blueberry gelato. The wine list is a little pricey. When making reservations, ask for the upper-level seating; the small bar area by the lower level door can be somewhat close and hectic.
