The themes of apocalypse and alienation that help define heavy metal also distance it from its roots in the uber-hippie 60s acid-rock scene, but the genre’s predisposition toward psychedelia has a way of showing through. In the decade or so that trippy stoner-doom bands like Sleep have served as major influences on up-and-coming acts, more and more metalheads have started taking obvious pride in how far-out they can get. Among this new generation of psychonauts is Brooklyn trio Tombs, whose recent Winter Hours (Relapse) begins with the formula My Bloody Valentine elevated to canon with Loveless—shimmering, heavily effected sheets of guitar, bigger than everything else in the mix—and adds tortured, howling vocals and a pummeling barrage of drums, taking it somewhere far darker than MBV ever dared venture.
