Upon turning 44, a successful beautician steps up her efforts to find Mr. Right and have a child before it's too late. The premise of this Czech comedy sounds like a Hollywood chick flick (the heroine even has an advice-spouting gay man for a best friend), yet writer-director Alice Nellis doesn't follow through with simple wish fulfillment. The movie, however funny, ruminates on the frustrations of being single and middle-aged, and the neurotic heroine isn't always meant to be sympathetic. Like fellow Czech director Jan Hrebejk (Kawasaki's Rose), Nellis demonstrates sympathy for her upper-middle-class characters without seeming complacent about their materialist lifestyle. Her widescreen framing conveys a sharp perspective as well, often presenting the characters in conflict with the posh settings. In Czech with subtitles.
