Pete Seeger: The Power of Song

This engaging 2007 documentary traces the life of folk icon Pete Seeger, emphasizing his lifelong belief in the power of music as both a social and a political force. A number of prominent talking heads—including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Joan Baez—share memories and celebrate facets of his work and ethos, but the most rewarding stories come from Seeger himself, along with a brother and sister, exploring his early interest in uncovering the secrets of rural American music and his refusal to play the game, whether it meant getting blacklisted during the Red Scare or refusing to shill for a cigarette company. Director Jim Brown tells the story well even if he refuses to address any of the singer's missteps (such as becoming infuriated when Dylan first plugged in at the Newport Folk Festival). 93 mins.
