Peter Bernstein All Ages Early Warnings (Music) Recommended Soundboard

When: Sat., June 2, 8 p.m. 2012

New York jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein is hardly an unknown quantity, but with his subtle phrasing and clean, unadorned tone, he doesn't exactly clamor for attention. He's the classic musician's musician—skilled, tasteful, a team player. His bluesiness and sense of economy have made him a go-to guitarist for organ trios, and over the years he's worked with Larry Goldings, Mel Rhyne, Jack McDuff, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Mike LeDonne, among others. Everything that makes Bernstein great is very much in evidence on his most recent album, 2011's Live at Smalls (Smalls Live), with Goldings and drummer Bill Stewart. Bernstein and Goldings contribute original tunes that fit perfectly amid classics from Miles Davis and Duke Pearson and standards by Porter and Kern. The guitarist can improvise at blazing tempos and dig into dense harmonic thickets, but he makes it all sound as effortless as breathing. Bernstein rarely makes it to Chicago, which makes this solo set even more special. —Peter Margasak
