Peter Blegvad

Singer, songwriter, guitarist, illustrator, cartoonist, and writer Peter Blegvad has never really attracted even a decent cult following--maybe because his path has been too twisted to follow. In the early 70s the American-born Blegvad moved to England to go to school, where he cofounded the prog band Slapp Happy with Anthony Moore and Dagmar Krause. After making three albums the group was absorbed into the art-rock behemoth Henry Cow; not long after that Blegvad quit. Since then he's sung with the Golden Palominos, performed on John Zorn's avant-garde masterpiece Locus Solus, and made several experimental recordings with former Henry Cow bassist John Greaves, but none of those endeavors compares with his own superb solo records, particularly the last three. Just Woke Up (ESD) is the most recent; its witty, observant lyrics ("Everyone's too nice to me / The way Vincent Price would be / With midnight coming on," from "Special Delivery") are couched in a comfortable, natural mix of folk rock, country, and sophisticated pop. Blegvad will perform solo and with fellow Palomino Syd Straw. Wednesday, 10 PM, Schubas, 3159 N. Southport; 773-525-2508. PETER MARGASAK
