August 16, 4:15 AM, 4400 block of North Broadway. Burglary. Man threw rock through window of adult bookstore and climbed inside. He left a few minutes later with stack of empty video boxes, not realizing tapes are kept elsewhere in store. Police subsequently discovered that burglar had thrown cash register to floor, apparently upon discovering it contained no money.

August 19, 11 PM, 4400 block of North Beacon. Robbery. Man on street was talking on cell phone. Two men jumped out of car and asked him for the time and a cigarette. Men produced gun, grabbed victim, and took his phone. During struggle victim got hold of gun, which broke in half. Robbers fled with phone. Gun turned out to be plastic toy wrapped in electrical tape.

August 22, 2 PM, 2100 block of South China Place. Theft. Two men walked into Chinese restaurant, took two full-size smoked pigs, carried them to car, and fled. Restaurant owner, who witnessed incident, valued pigs at $70 apiece.

August 28, 6:30 AM, 1400 block of East 54th Street. Robbery. Two men approached man at gunpoint and demanded money. Man handed over backpack. As robbers fled, victim shouted, "There's nothing in there but poetry!" Robber turned and shot at poet but missed.
