The flyer for P.H. Flow’s headlining set tonight says he’ll be “performing the hit ‘Over & Over,’” which seems like wishful thinking—the song isn’t anywhere close to that, racking up just a few dozen listens in its first two weeks on Soundcloud. The fledgling local rapper, aka Kamal Mangram, isn’t yet at a place where any of his songs can be described as popular, at least not in the way the data-crunching digital era defines the term. Still, while the stakes so far are low, Mangram makes the track feel big, leapfrogging the jubilant, hiccuping vocal samples laid down by producer General Beats to make the designation “hit” feel earned regardless of the numbers. Most of the material on his recent mixtape So Close, Yet So Far doesn’t equal the high mark set by “Over & Over,” but it shows he’s on the right path.
