On last year’s For the People (Origin) Chicago trumpeter Pharez Whitted reprises his role as a keeper of the postbop flame, though he does give the music a glossy modern veneer. This is Whitted’s second album with his superb local sextet—guitarist and coproducer Bobby Broom, saxophonist Eddie Bayard, pianist Ron Perrillo, bassist Dennis Carroll, and drummer Greg Artry—and the band brings plenty of verve and substance to a familiar idiom. A few tracks veer dangerously close to a smooth-jazz sound, but for the most part this compact unit moves from one subgenre to another—funky soul jazz (“Another Kinda Blues”), Coltrane-style seeking (“Freedom Song”), the muted balladry of early-60s Miles Davis (the title track), classic 50s hard bop (“Keep the Faith”)—with little fuss and even less waste. —Peter Margasak
