To the editors:

Your interesting article comparing the 1892 "Masonic Temple" and the 1987 "190 South LaSalle" buildings [September 11] missed one critical contrast: The older building's numerous shops added to a thriving street life while today's look-alike presents bare walls to the pedestrian.

The new "190 South LaSalle" building simply offers another nameless addition to the corporate skyline. Ignoring the need for shops, restaurants, and places to sit, this new building ignores human needs and further pushes our society into equally formless suburbs.
