Phobia The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Tuesdays. Continues through July 26 2011

Playwright Shane Strawbridge gives more than a nod to Frank Stockton's 1882 short story "The Lady, or the Tiger?" in this cautionary thriller about a supernatural morality squad that forces an adulterer to confront his wife. The setup, allegory, and open-ended conclusion are all similar; what's missing is Stockton's simple sophistication and slow-burning tension. By providing too much backstory (the squad was in on the JFK and Lady Diana killings, we're told), phobia undermines its own mystery and neglects more interesting discussions regarding infidelity and retribution. The cast dig deep to form mostly believable relationships, but their efforts go only so far in a play marked by shoddy character logic and unironed kinks. —Dan Jakes
