A late-night destination for homemade pizza, near the Matchbox.
Even as recently as half a dozen years ago, Chicago's pizza-by-the-slice game was weak; predictably you'd find the boring choice of cheese, sausage, or pepperoni slices, all kept in a Plexiglas pizza rewarmer till the cheese turned to Naugahyde. I was prepared for disappointment when I stepped into Pie-Eyed and saw cheese, sausage, and pepperoni slices, but owner Ian Muellner explained that they were about to hit their lunch rush and advised me to wait for the Monster, which would be out in about ten minutes. It was good advice. Despite its name, the Monster isn't all that excessive. There's balance between (not too much) sausage, pepperoni, bacon, and soppressata, plus some strips of red pepper to add a little sweetness. It's a heck of a good slice to run across just sitting out waiting for you at lunchtime.
