Pierced Arrows, Lover!, Big Knife Recommended Early Warnings (Music) Soundboard

When: Sat., Oct. 11, 10 p.m. 2008

I don’t know if living in Natchez, Mississippi, and working on an oil rig did the same special something for guitarist and singer Rich Crook that staying at Big Pink did for the Band, but since returning to Memphis and starting this group (its first show was in May 2007) he’s been massively prolific. A veteran of the Reatards, the Lost Sounds, and the Knaughty Knights, with Lover! he’s already released two full-lengths, plus singles on practically every garage-rock label worth its weight in limited-edition pink vinyl—this tour is in support of the five most recent. Tunes like “Booger in My Asshole” and “I’m Not a Gnome,” though hardly sophisticated lyrically, suggest that the ever evolving Memphis garage scene is growing in yet another direction; they’re new wavey, but with a perverse, poppy playfulness instead of the Lost Sounds’ apocalyptic anger. And Crook’s songwriting gets better with every seven-inch. —Brian Costello
