Pine Flat

In 12 long, lush, elegantly composed takes, Sharon Lockhart shows kids in a rural California community: one reads a book, another plays harmonica, others wrestle or embrace in the grass. The meditative pace of her 2006 film lets the mind wander, and one wonders if the children are going about their business or posing for the camera. Though they seem to act naturally, the long takes convert them into show objects, an effect both fascinating and disturbing; there's a push-pull between their humanity and Lockhart's distant sidelong glances. 135 min.
