Following their sleeper hit Superbad, screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg team up with David Gordon Green, the gifted young director of such indie southern gothics as George Washington, All the Real Girls, and Undertow. This isn't as strange a marriage as it might sound: Green shares with Rogen and Goldberg a passion for low-budget action flicks and with producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up) a loose, improvisatory directing style. But this tale of a rumpled process server (Rogen) and his bleary dope dealer (James Franco) on the run from a murderous drug lord (Gary Cole) never generates any big laughs, and the chase elements are so intentionally cliched they never take on a life of their own. Watching this is like watching kids play with Hot Wheels—not a bad time at all, but I wouldn't pay ten bucks for it. With Amber Heard, Rosie Perez, and Danny McBride. R, 112 min.
