Pippin Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Sundays. Continues through Nov. 13 2011

BoHo Theatre's revival of the 1972 Broadway musical hit looks tailor-made for austere times. The stage is empty except for a collection of high-backed chairs, the actors are backed by a simple four-piece band. Simplicity also suits the story Stephen Schwartz and Roger Hirson tell about the ne'er-do-well son of Charlemagne and his very Me-Decade quest to find himself. Yet there's something unsatisfying about the whole enterprise. The material comes across as dated and at once naive and gratuitously dark. Schwartz's songs feel shallow and glib, and the performances, although acceptable, rarely reach the heights to which the material clearly aspires. I left feeling like Pippin himself--unfulfilled and yearning for a vague something I couldn't quite name. --Jack Helbig
