Pippin | The Music Theatre Company Space | Theater & Performance | Chicago Reader

Pippin Closing (Theater and Galleries) The Short List (Theater)

When: Thursdays-Saturdays. Continues through May 13 2012

The book is flat and dated, the Brechtian byplay feels hokey, and the plot (about Charlemagne's son's quest for personal fulfillment) is inane. But a more-than-capable cast compensates in this Music Theatre Company production. Joey Stone is superbly engaging—not to say, sexy—as the Mephistophelean Leading Player, counterbalanced by Andrew Keltz's wide-eyed, self-involved Pippin. Still, the most memorable moments come in the ensemble numbers showcasing Jessica Redish's clever staging and flawless, Fosse-style choreography. The Leading Player's troupe—especially lithe Emily Rogers—alternate between glam and the grotesque as they try to lure Pippen into the flames. —Marissa Oberlander
