Inspired by the Disneyland ride, this typically bloated production from Jerry Bruckheimer is good swashbuckling fun for the first few reels but eventually slows to a halt under the weight of too many doubloons. When the daughter (Keira Knightley) of a British colonial governor (Jonathan Pryce) is kidnapped by undead pirates, her blacksmith lover (Orlando Bloom) takes off in hot pursuit. Geoffrey Rush kicks up a lot of dust as the wicked captain of the ghost ship, but the one real bright spot is Johnny Depp as heroic pirate Jack Sparrow, doing his level best to subvert the PG-13 rating with a grandly swishy performance. Gore Verbinski directed. 133 min.
