Polish Film Festival in America

The festival's concluding weekend runs November 19 through 21 at the Beverly Arts Center and the Society for Arts, 1112 N. Milwaukee. Tickets are $9, $7 for documentaries. For more information call 773-486-9612; a complete schedule appears online at www.pffamerica.com.

All the dramatic features were screened earlier in the festival, but there's a repeat screening this weekend of Maciej Zak's The Bench (87 min., in Polish with subtitles), about a romantically inclined young woman (Jola Fraszynska) who falls under the spell of a womanizing auto dealer (Beverly Arts Center, Fri 11/19, 7 PM). Among the documentaries, the locally produced Father Szeliga (45 min., in Polish with subtitles) profiles a 94-year-old Pole who discovered the anticancer medication vilcacora during his travels among the indigenous peoples of the Amazon (Society for Arts, Fri 11/19, 9 PM). In Real Cops--Krzysiek & Slawek (2003, 36 min., in Polish with subtitles) director Krzysztof Lang follows up on a TV reality series about police officers and learns that two of the principals have since quit the force, unable to withstand the pressures of the work (Society for Arts, Sat 11/20, 7 PM). Eugene Starky's Honor of the City (55 min.) revisits the Warsaw uprising against the Nazis in 1944 (Society for Arts, Sun 11/21, 3 PM). And Marek Drazewski's Wladyslaw Szpilman 1911-2000: In His Own Words (56 min., in unsubtitled Polish) profiles the classical pianist whose harrowing experiences during the occupation were dramatized in Roman Polanski's The Pianist (Society for Arts, Sun 11/21, 5:30 PM).
