The 17th Polish Film Festival in America continues through Sunday, November 20, with documentaries screening by video projection at Society for Arts, 1112 N. Milwaukee. Tickets are $10, $8 students and seniors; a festival pass good for five screenings is available for $45. All films are in Polish with subtitles. Among this weekend's screenings is a three-part retrospective of work by veteran Polish documentarian Jacek Blawut, who will attend. Headlining the first program, The Abnormal (1990, 78 min.) focuses on a music teacher who arrives at an educational center for mentally handicapped children and has only a month to school them on instruments (Fri 11/18, 9 PM). Born Dead (2004, 53 min.), a prizewinner at the Krakow film festival, is about a young career criminal assigned to a therapeutic facility for retarded children; it screens with I Had a Friend (1996, 29 min.), about a Polish peacekeeper who loses a leg in Sarajevo, and I Was a Wehrmacht General (1988, 19 min.), the true story of a Polish spy among the Nazis during World War II (Sat 11/19, 9 PM). The retrospective concludes with The Crowned Rat (57 min.), a personal chronicle of Blawut's friendship with a 30-year-old alcoholic, and A Native Country (2003, 26 min.), about a young man whose job as a census taker leads him into illuminating conversations (Sun 11/20, 5 PM).
