Bolek Pzoniak (Gabriel Byrne), a baker in Detroit, often wakes up early enough to see his unfaithful wife, Jadzia (Lena Olin), coming home from a nocturnal outing. Their large family includes daughter Hala (Claire Danes), a smoldering teenager who seduces the policeman obsessed with her even as she vies for the honor—bestowed only on virgins—of leading a church procession. This occasionally humorous but mostly ponderous story compares the sexual behavior of the two women for the sake of a superficial parallel. Written and directed by Theresa Connelly. With Adam Trese.
