In this sword-and-sandal actioner by Paul W.S. Anderson, Mount Vesuvius erupts, and a slave-turned-gladiator (Kit Harrington) woos a wealthy woman (Emily Browning) as Pompeii is destroyed. Anderson is fascinated by the human form (his Resident Evil series is an ode to the balletic movements of his wife/muse, Milla Jovovich), and this fixation works its way into his visual style. The film is bookended by reverential shots of ash-encrusted bodies frozen in time, and his muscular characters are all the more imposing in stereoscopic 3D. But narrative has never been Anderson's strength; the story here is a corny overhaul of James Cameron's already-corny Titanic. With Kiefer Sutherland in hammy comic-book mode as the villain.
