Poncho y Papaya The Short List (Theater) Closing (Theater and Galleries)

When: Wednesdays. Continues through Dec. 21 2011

At the beginning of this lighthearted set of clowning sketches, the audience is asked to name a Shakespeare play. Oh, how I wish I'd shouted out Henry VI or Troilus and Cressida—anything more challenging that the obvious, inevitable suggestion we ended up with. Not that Poncho y Papaya's elastic riff on Romeo and Juliet wasn't fun. The four-clown troupe has an infectious beginners' energy, and each scene unfolds with its own bizarre logic. A flute compels Papaya to dance, Poncho goes on a date with a drawing of a girl. Though they still have a long way to go in developing their clown personas, they're off to a good start. I'll be back for their version of Timon of Athens. —Keith Griffith
