Most animated features these days try to appeal to kids and parents alike, but Disney aims this new Winnie the Pooh adventure squarely at preschoolers, which allows it to play the heartstrings, helped along by catchy new tunes from Carly Simon. Mysterious tracks in the Hundred Acre Wood send the bear of very little brain and his pals on a comical hunt for the terrifying heffalump. Roo, an infant kangaroo, is left behind because he's too young (an experience with which small children can easily identify), so he mounts his own expedition and learns a few valuable lessons (people different from us aren't necessarily bad, friends support each other). Director Frank Nissen strikes a nice balance between slapstick and sentiment, and I'll admit to getting a bit choked up at the appropriate moments. G, 68 min.
