Gonzalo Guzman
The first portrait of Garcia. Guzman was learning to print in the color darkroom and needed a subject to hold a gray card to practice color balancing. Guzman lived with his grandfather throughout college and got to know his grandfather better apart from the camera.

Garcia and the wedding wall. Garcia's living room is full of family portraits and pictures from each of his nine children's weddings. It stands as constant reminder of the family he has built.

A large photo of Garcia hangs in the living room. It can be seen from the sidewalk, when one looks through the window. Garcia doesn't seem to mind, as it's been up for several years. Guzman likes to think it is watching over the house while he's gone.

Garcia's Navy Portrait, 1956 Garcia was drafted into the Navy shortly after immigrating to the United States. He didn't know English at the time, but taught himself by watching American movies on the ship during his downtime.

My mother was one of nine children. My grandparents decided to put them all through private school which meant long days for both of them and seven day work weeks for my grandfather.

Garcia after surgery. Guzman notes that his grandfather seems to be aging faster each year. Garcia is still sharp, but feels his age now. When Guzman visits, his grandfather tells him that he gets dizzy walking to the bus or feels unmotivated to go to the gym each morning like he use to, when they lived together.
