Post-Christmas Spectacular 1976 Closing (Theater and Galleries) New Review (Theater and Comedy) The Short List (Theater)

When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through Jan. 25 2009

This new Brain Surgeon Theater musical ends abruptly after 45 minutes, leaving a long list of unresolved questions--chief among them, "What just happened?" And yet for all its puzzlements, I wouldn't have missed this rough, silly, heartfelt, exuberant, not-quite-finished tale about a time-traveling spider, a benign ghost, and some small-town Michiganders whose lives keep getting replayed until they come out right. Created by a mixed group of kids and professionally trained adults, Post-Christmas Spectacular 1976 embodies the DIY ensemble elan so often referenced but rarely seen in Chicago storefront theater. This is the sort of show where it feels like they put a big production number at the beginning just because they couldn't wait to get to it. --Tony Adler
